"We were Neighbors Back Then ..."

'Bout a hundred years ago ... okay, well back in the early fifties anyway ... my family of 7 lived right behind the Prince's Hamburgers at Gulf Freeway (I-45) and Cullen Blvd.  My dad owned the old P & M Grocery, as well as the property where the old Texaco station sat, along with Big Red's Barber Shop, Pilgrim Cleaners, and an upper floor office complex that had a variety of tenants over the years.  And in fact our own home was just behind all that .. at 4009 Dennis Street.  But I understand that all of that property is now long gone, (even Dennis Street itself) after it was donated to the University of Houston some time back in the late 1970's.

But my memories of those childhood days there will live as long as I do.  Memories of the time myself & my little buddies walked up to a Prince's carhop with my pet hognose snake for example;  asked her if she'd like to pet it, then were rewarded with the entire contents of her tray .. burgers, shakes, fries & sodas all dumped right on top of us as she took off screaming to the high heavens, back inside the building.  I think I was about 7 years old at the time.  But mainly I remember those incredibly tasty real beef burgers on poppy seed buns, loaded with everything you could possibly expect on a burger.  And malts like I've never found anywhere since.  Sometimes my dad would take my brothers and myself over to the old Buffalo stadium across the freeway from Prince's for night time baseball games.  And we never went without first stopping for a big bag of burgers & fries.  He'd buy us the drinks (and beer for himself) when we got to the games.

I moved here to Austin in 1975, and we have no Prince's burgers.  But you'll always be in my heart anyway.  There are none that can "cut the mustard" like you do.   Oh, by the way, do you guys still "Stretch A Pair, Walkin' - like you did for us in the fifties ???  (That's "Two Coke's To Go" as I recall.)
